I’m a music junkie. I love how it makes me feel, how it helps me remember, how it can enhance or change my mood depending upon why I seek it. I have the utmost respect for people who are able to craft these beautiful, strange, intense, delicate, interesting, life-altering sounds, and I’m immensely curious to pick their brains in an effort to discover the magic of their gift. I also have great respect for people brave enough to perform their art works in front of others – it’s a unique attribute of music that the artist gets immediate feedback on their work.
I also love to write. I feel a huge responsibility when I describe music – I want to help people experience the feelings I do when I hear particular songs, before they even press play. I love it when the perfect words present themselves, when a phrase links up in my brain and flows out onto the page, and it captures what I feel is the essence of a song. Thus, I am a music journalist.
I’ve had lots of incredible experiences over the years related to my chosen path. I had the opportunity to DJ a show at UT’s student station, KVRX, for five semesters. I wrote for The Daily Texan, the student paper, for four. I’ve attended the Austin City Limits festival almost every year I’ve lived in Austin (barring only 2009, due to a broken ankle), and I’ve yet to miss a South by Southwest festival in the past 4 years. Most of all, I try to keep abreast of the incredible acts doing amazing things locally. I was also lucky enough to intern in New York City at Rolling Stone during my summer 2009, an experience I will never forget.
Today, I’m a UT graduate with two Bachelor’s degrees (one in Radio/TV/Film and another in Multimedia Journalism.) I work for Ramser Media, where I edit, fact-check and write for Texas Music magazine and Horns Illustrated. I hope to return to Germany, where I studied for a semester in 2008, and stretch meine Deutsche vocab. I hope I can help people discover the incredible music that is out there, and create a little of my own art in the process.
